About the Saya’s yellow travertine
Travertine is a natural limestone formed by mineral-rich spring water. As the water flows and evaporates, it leaves behind layer upon layer of calcium carbonate, and tiny bubbles of gas trapped along the way create the stone’s signature pores and texture. Its color comes from the minerals in that water: traces of iron give yellow travertine its warm, honeyed, sunlit tone. The ancient Romans quarried travertine near Tivoli to build the Colosseum, the largest building in the world made mostly of travertine, and its warm hues still define the look of Rome today. The Saya’s base is hand-polished to reveal a beautiful contrast of textures, with smooth, satiny surfaces beside rougher, more natural areas that let the stone’s character show through. Because it’s natural stone, no two bases are ever alike, and every Saya has its own pattern of pores, tone and texture. Is it real travertine, and will mine look like the photos?
Yes, the Saya’s base is genuine natural yellow travertine, hand-polished to show both smooth and naturally textured areas. Because travertine forms naturally over thousands of years, every piece has its own unique pores, color and texture, so your Saya will closely resemble the photos but will never be an exact copy. Those variations aren’t flaws; they’re what make each lamp one of a kind. To keep it beautiful, dust it with a soft, dry cloth and avoid water and acidic cleaners, which can etch natural stone.
What bulb does it use, and how do I turn it on?
The Saya uses a standard E26 bulb, up to 40W, and works with LED or Edison-style bulbs. For the warmest glow through the fabric shade and the best match with the honeyed stone, we recommend a warm white LED around 2700K–3000K. It plugs into any standard US outlet with its 59.1″ (150 cm) cord, and you turn it on and off with the push-button switch on the cord, so there’s no installation needed.
How big is it, and where does it look best?
The Saya measures 18.9″ W × 17.7″ H (48 × 45 cm), a generous size with real presence. It looks best where it has room to shine: on a console, sideboard or entry table, on a living room side table beside a sofa, or on a large nightstand in a primary bedroom. A pair on either end of a sideboard or console creates a beautifully balanced look. Because natural stone is heavy, place it on a sturdy surface. It’s designed for indoor, dry spaces.
