About rattan
Rattan comes from a family of climbing palms that grow in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, Africa and Australia, with most of the world’s supply coming from Indonesia. It’s often mistaken for bamboo, but unlike bamboo’s hollow stems, rattan is solid, so it’s light yet remarkably strong. When gently heated, it becomes flexible enough to bend and weave by hand, then holds its shape as it cools, a craft practiced for centuries. Rattan is also one of nature’s more sustainable materials: it grows quickly and can be harvested without cutting down trees, which helps keep forests standing. In a pendant light, the open weave works like a natural filter, softening the bulb’s glow and casting a gentle pattern of light and shadow across your walls and ceiling. Each shade is woven by hand, so subtle variations in tone and texture make every piece one of a kind. To keep it looking its best, dust it with a soft brush and keep it away from moisture.

Can I adjust how low it hangs?
Yes. The cord adjusts up to 47.2″ (120 cm), so you can set it to suit your space: higher over a hallway or reading chair, lower over a dining table or kitchen island. Over a table, most people hang pendants about 30–36″ above the surface.
What kind of bulb does it use?
It takes a standard E26/E27 bulb (not included) and works with LED bulbs. A warm white bulb (2700–3000K) brings out the soft, patterned glow through the rattan weave. Bulbs with a visible filament or a frosted globe both look good inside the open shade.
How is it installed, and is it hard to care for?
The Kaia mounts to the ceiling with a 3.9″ canopy that covers a standard electrical box, and we recommend having a qualified electrician install it. Care is simple: dust the rattan gently with a soft brush and keep it away from moisture, so it’s best for indoor, dry rooms, not bathrooms.
